Walter "Sam" Hoffman

Jun 17, 1941 — Oct 24, 2026

Walter "Sam" Hoffman, 85, of Freeport, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 24, 2026. He was born on June 17,1941, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to the late Walter and Mildred Hoffman. He grew up in Coolspring alongside his three sisters, Linda, Patricia, and Faith.

A proud graduate of Clarion University, Sam dedicated 34 years to teaching history and economics in the Highlands School District. Teaching was his passion, and his love of history and knowledge earned him the affectionate nickname "Mr. Jeopardy" from his students. He loved a good conversation and was always ready for a lively debate. Sam also had a successful tax business where many of his clients became dear friends.

In April 1967, Sam married the love of his life, Darlene Heavner. Together, they raised their three daughters, Heather, Samantha, and Jaime. Sam treasured family vacations to Virginia Beach, visits to historical landmarks, and trips to amusement parks. He especially adored his three grandchildren, Alyssa, Garrick, and Alexis, delighting them with made-up songs, silly words, and affectionate teasing.

Sam was a devoted Pittsburgh sports fan who proudly held Steelers season tickets for over 30 years. He also cherished his annual fishing trips to Canada, visits to the casinos, and time spent with his best buddies at the Harrison Hills Firehall.

Known for his strong opinions, quick wit, and unmistakable personality, Sam was passionate about the things he loved. Beneath his spirited nature was a man who deeply valued his family, friendships, and the memories made throughout his life.

Sam is survived by his beloved wife, Darlene Heavner Hoffman; his daughters, Heather (Garrick) Lapusnak, Samantha Perlik, and Jaime (Dustin) Mochanski; his grandchildren, Alyssa (Troy) Fetter, Garrick Lapusnak, and Alexis Perlik; his sisters, Linda, Patricia, and Faith; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sam's voice may now be quiet, but the stories he shared, the laughter he inspired, and the lessons he taught will never be forgotten. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him, carried forward through every story, smile, and cherished memory he leaves behind.
