Ruth S. Cowan

May 21, 1935 — October 11, 2022

Ruth S. (Stroud) Cowan, 87, of Natrona Heights, passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2022. She was born May 21, 1935, in Ford City, a daughter of the late Charles and Ruth (Swaggler) Stroud.

She graduated from Har-Brack High School in 1954. Upon graduation, she became a programmer in the early years of computer technology at Gulf Research Technology. She left Gulf to marry her high school sweetheart and start a family.

Ruth was a talented seamstress and self-taught upholsterer. She generously offered her talents to friends and family with work that reflected her passion for excellence. Ruth’s beloved sewing machine, Frankie, could be heard whirring through the wee hours, re-stitching any seam that didn’t meet Ruth’s exacting standards. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed reading many genres. She volunteered as a driver and organizer of Meals on Wheels for several years.

Her memory will be cherished by her husband of 64 years, Louis H. Cowan, her children, Julie (William) Porter, of Natrona Heights, David (Vicki) Cowan, of Lakewood, California and Linda Cowan, of Cleveland, Ohio; her grandchildren, Beth (Rich), Dana (Justin), Douglas (Diatrah), Rachel, Natalie and Grant and by her great grandchildren, Nora, Emma, Evelyn and Ethan. In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her daughter, Cynthia S. Cowan and by her brothers, Charles, John, Thomas and James Stroud.

Services and burial for Ruth were private. Arrangements are under the care of the Cicholski-Zidek Funeral Home, Inc., Natrona Heights 724-224-8688. Contributions in memory of Ruth may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA. 22116. to send an online condolence please visit
